Hi Everybody,
This has been a very stressful week for me and Ruby who has been very poorly for most of it. I took her to the vets as I was very worried when she was being sick, and they kept her in to run some tests.
Yesterday I got the results back from blood tests and her scan. The blood test shows that her thyroid is working correctly but the scan has shown that she has Cushing Disease
I had never heard of this complaint but I sure have done some research since. It is a condition where her body cannot regulate the amount of Cortisol it produces.
Some of the symptoms are lethargy, vomiting, excessive panting, muscle weakness, extended belly, eye/ear/skin infections and skin problems too.
Over the last few months she has had her fair share of them and been treated for them, and I added it to the blog post when she was having problems with her eye just a few months ago.
But it wasn't until this week that we have had a definite diagnosis. She has been really poorly, and sadly the disease is incurable. She is not in danger but she will be on medication for the rest of her life.
I am hoping that the medication will give her some quality of life back again and give her the strength to run around and bark at everything again with her pal Dougal. Please keep your fingers crossed for a good recovery for her and I will of course keep you posted as to her progress.
Thank you all so much for the personal messages that have come to me and for your comments on the blog.
Hugs xx

ReplyDeleteI guess that is not the greatest news, but at least a diagnosis gives you some more information. I hope that the medication gives her relief and is not too difficult for her to take.

ReplyDeleteHi Christina, I know you're worried, who wouldn't be? But you have to look on the bright side, at least now you know why she wasn't feeling well. With a diagnosis, vets can prescribe the right medication and hopefully Ruby will feel better soon. She is in my thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourself and Ella.

Ohhh Christina... Now you have a diagnosis to know what Precious Ruby is facing. It goes without saying, we were all hoping for much better. I lost my little Annie to this. The medication they offered had side effects that we thought were worse than the disease. Medication may have improved, as it's been a good eight years ago now. Watch her carefully to see how she reacts to it, should you decide to give it to her. Our fur babies are family members and we love them as such. I know you'll be strong for her and give her the best life you can. Big Hugs to you both. xo
ReplyDeleteOh no, poor ruby. At least you have a diagnosis and hopefully once she’s started on the correct medication, she’ll be much improved. Such a stressful time for you too.

Hope Ruby hasn’t got Cushing our Millie we was told she had it ,they we’re giving her tablets for it and a while later they told us she didn’t have it we still lost her because they were treating her for Cushings and didn’t have it ,the wrong treatment caused her kidneys to fail so we lost her ,so please get another check that it’s definitely Cushing love to Ruby xxxx
ReplyDeleteThank goodness the vets have got a diagnosis; and whilst not curable it is treatable. Sending you both positive wishes.
ReplyDeleteNot the best of news but at least now with a diagnosis she can be treated. Keeping fingers crossed she will soon be back to old self. Love to you both. Jackie xx
ReplyDeletePets are part of the family and it's so upsetting when they aren't well. Proper, regular

ReplyDeleteI know this was not the message you wanted to receive, but hopefully the medication will work for Ruby. Hopefully Ruby and Dougal will soon be back at play and she will have many many more years left to enjoy your love and devotion. Peace to you all. Kathy O.

ReplyDeleteOh Christina, some people say good you've got to the bottom of what it is, not good sometime, you are on internet, as soon to find out every little thing about the disease. I hope she picks up. You will be worried sick. So hugs to you both, and kiss to Ruby from me. You take care of yourself too, as we worry ourselves sick with every little thing that happens to our furry family.
